Kyle McCord, a native of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, attended Ohio State out of high school. Per 247Sports, McCord signed with Ohio State over many other offers that included Arizona, Penn State and more. After three seasons at Ohio State, McCord transferred to Syracuse in 2024.

Son of a former Rutgers quarterback, Kyle McCord was a three-year starter at St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia. McCord was rated as high as a five-star as the No. 25 overall player in the country, the No. 2 player in Pennsylvania behind Nolan Rucci and the No. 3 quarterback in the class of 2021, depending on the recruiting service.

McCord finished with a city and league record 6,887 passing yards and 88 passing touchdowns. He led St. Joseph's Prep to three straight state championships as a starter, throwing for six touchdowns in the 6A semifinal game before completing 21 of 28 passes (75 percent) for 336 yards and four touchdowns in the title game. McCord was named to the 2020 Pennsylvania MaxPreps All-State team.
